Barca new manager Coach Flick Has First ‘New Signing’

FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick effectively has his first ‘new signing’ at the club in identifying a ‘franchise player’ according to AS, which cited anonymous sources.

Gavi hasn’t been seen in action since last November, when he ruptured his ACL while on international duty with Spain during the first half of a pretty meaningless Nations League encounter against Georgia.

In late March, Culers became excited when Barca uploaded clips of the youngster training on the beach to social media, and AS reports that Gavi “has not stopped working for a day, to be able to be one hundred percent physically as soon as possible”.

This claim was backed up by further footage shared on the same channels this week, with Mundo Deportivo remarking that Gavi is training “with high intensity levels” and “in a true Rocky Balboa fashion”.

Given the amount of time that Gavi has been off the pitch, and how much he has been missed by his team, it is often said in Spain that a player in such circumstances will be like a “new signing” once they’ve made their comeback.

And according to AS, Gavi has been identified as a “franchise player” under Flick given the former Bayern Munich coach likes his teams to be “intense and press a lot in the opponent’s half”.

There are few players in world football that fit the bill better than Gavi for this, with AS noting that he “always empties himself in games from the first to the last minute”.

Gavi is expected to fit perfectly into the German’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system and should play on the left of midfield while probably partnering Ilkay Gundogan and Pedri in a trio.

He’s also a shout for the double pivot, however, potentially lining up alongside Frenkie de Jong or maybe even Joshua Kimmich if cash-strapped Barca can raise the funds to buy him from Flick’s ex-employers Munich.

While Gavi was previously expected to return between October and November “if there are no setbacks” according to AS, that date could be brought forward given the hard work he is putting into returning to the pitch.
