Pep Guardiola breaks silence on Enzo Maresca chelsea appointment with performance prediction

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has already predicted that Enzo Maresca will become an ‘extraordinary’ manager, three years before his expected appointment at Chelsea.

The Blues are closing in on confirming the Italian as their new head coach as their search for a replacement for Mauricio Pochettino reaches its conclusion. Maresca enjoyed a successful first full season in management, leading Leicester City to the Championship title in the season just gone.

The 44-year-old joined Leicester from Man City after being number two to Guardiola in the treble-winning season. It was his second spell at the Etihad Stadium after he previously managed the club’s elite development squad (EDS), a short spell as manager of Serie B side Parma fell in between his two stints at City.

Speaking in 2021, after Maresca led the Man City development squad to the Premier League 2 title, Guardiola made a big prediction over Maresca’s managerial credentials, making a comparison to another of his former assistants

‘We are delighted with Enzo Maresca, all the organisation he has done with the EDS, he showed he will become an extraordinary manager in the future. Extraordinary.

“I feel it. Like I felt it when I saw Mikel Arteta I see it with Enzo, [he] will be an extraordinary manager and he helped to develop many, many young players.”

Guardiola also highlighted the impact that Maresca and fellow assistant manager Rodolfo Barrell had on the treble-winning campaign in 2022/23. Speaking after Maresca’s move to Leicester he joked: “I don’t know what happens with my assistant managers, I take care of them incredibly well and all of the time they drop me!

“I want to say thank you a lot to Rodo for the incredible seven years together and Enzo for the last year. They were an incredible part of the success we had and I wish them, Rodo in MLS and Enzo with Leicester, the best. They deserve the best.”
