More is expected of this Chelsea star as Mauricio Pochettino plans for summer transfers

Mauricio Pochettino admits he ‘expects more’ from big-money Chelsea signing Moises Caicedo and has revealed he has begun working on transfers ahead of the summer window.

Caicedo completed a £115m move to Stamford Bridge last summer after Chelsea beat Premier League rivals Liverpool to a deal for the ex-Brighton midfielder.

The Ecuador international flourished at Brighton throughout the 2022-23 campaign, establishing himself as one of the most highly-rated defensive midfielders in England.

Caicedo has been unable to replicate that form for Chelsea, however, and Pochettino insists he ‘expects more’ from the 22-year-old next season.

‘I expect more from him even if he is doing well,’ Pochettino said ahead of Chelsea’s penultimate league game against Caicedo’s former club Brighton.

‘I think next season I have no doubt he will be much better. Now he knows what it means to play for Chelsea, all of the pressure off.

‘The players believe in the way that we work and they agree in the way we want to apply our philosophy and the way to play and that is fantastic.

‘The idea to have players that really trust and believe and that is why the future will be amazing. He is one of the players that still has room to improve.’

Caicedo is certainly not the only Chelsea player to underwhelm this season in a team sitting seventh in the Premier League ahead of the final day.

But the Blues have at least showed an upturn in form towards the end of the campaign, winning their last three games to make up ground on their rivals for European football next season.

Pochettino was fighting to save his job at Stamford Bridge earlier in the year but the former Tottenham boss is now expected to stay at Chelsea and try to push their young but exciting squad up the Premier League table.

He gave another indication that he will still be in the hot-seat next year at his pre-Brighton press conference, revealing he had already begun working on transfers ahead of the summer window.

‘Now is going to start a period where players want to leave, maybe some offers arrive or players that we want to add to the squad,’ he added. ‘Of course, we have already started to work on this.’

After travelling to the south coast to face Brighton on Wednesday evening, Chelsea finish the 2023-24 campaign at home to Bournemouth on the final day.
