Chelsea star forward return reality clear after loan success

Chelsea are likely to have an eye on tonight’s Champions League semi-final between Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.

Tuesday night sees the Parc des Princes host the second leg between PSG and Dortmund in the Champions League. Dortmund hold a 1-0 lead from the first leg thanks to a goal from Niclas Fullkrug at the Signal Iduna Park a week ago.

One player who has been vital to Dortmund’s success in Europe this season is Ian Maatsen. The left-back left Chelsea in the January transfer window to join Dortmund on loan after making 15 appearances across the first half of the season.

Since then, Maatsen has made 19 appearances for Dortmund across the Bundesliga and Champions League and has been the starting left-back for Edin Terzic’s team. It remains to be seen what will happen with Maatsen’s future when he returns to Chelsea this summer after what has been a successful loan spell so far for the defender.

Last summer there was reported interest in a permanent deal for Maatsen before he opted to stay with Chelsea. Manager Mauricio Pochettino explained during his first weeks on the job how impressed he was by Maatsen during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

“I am so happy with him [Maatsen],” Pochettino told Chelsea’s club website in July last year. “He is a player that can play in different positions. He has quality, he understands the game, and he is such a clever player.”

Pochettino also explained how Maatsen was part of his plans going forward for Chelsea. The Blues manager was impressed by Maatsen’s versatility in the early stages of his footballing career.

“So far, he is in my plan, yes,” said Pochettino. “I am so pleased with him, as I’ve said, because of his attitude, commitment and his understanding of the game.

“He is a player that you can use in different positions and that is a good thing for the team and the coaching staff. It is always good to have this type of player.”

Chelsea will have a decision to make regarding Maatsen’s future, especially if Dortmund make it clear they want to sign the left-back on a permanent deal. Pochettino has already made it clear how highly he rates the 22-year-old, but it’s still not clear where Maatsen will be playing his football next season.
