Why Noni Madueke shouts in referee’s face and dragged away in ugly scenes

Chelsea star Noni Madueke shouted in the face of referee Craig Pawson and had to be dragged away in ugly scenes after Saturday’s 2-2 at Aston Villa.

The Blues were controversially denied a 96th-minute winner at Villa Park after a long VAR check, leading to some furious reactions from Chelsea’s players.

Following the full-time whistle, Madueke ran up to Pawson and was seen shouting in his face, with the player being restrained by Chelsea coach Jesus Perez.

‘It’s wrong, you know it’s wrong,’ Madueke and Chelsea teammate Benoit Badiashile reportedly said while pointing at Pawson. ‘You know it. You know it!’

Madueke was then grabbed by fellow Chelsea star Axel Disasi, who calmed him down and walked him away from the situation.

‘Should it have been three points? Yes,’ Madueke told the BBC in a post-match interview.

‘Do I think the goal should have stood? Yes. Nothing else to say about the situation.’

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has slammed the decision to disallow Axel Disasi’s late goal and believes it has ‘damaged the image of English football’.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, a clearly annoyed Pochettino said: ‘I think everyone that was watching the game feels disappointed. I think we need to explain to the people also two different things.

‘If the referee says foul and disallows the goal it’s one thing, and then go to the VAR and confirm, that is [fine] to stay with the decision.

‘But when the referee didn’t see nothing and then goes with the VAR and changes the decision of the referee there…

‘I’m not going to say nothing bad, I don’t want to talk bad about the referee or the [VAR] but it’s unbelievable, it’s ridiculous. It’s difficult to accept this type of thing.

‘In the semi-final [of the FA Cup] two weeks ago it was handball and that was no penalty and the VAR says no penalty and the referee didn’t check. And now this situation. So yes, of course, it’s really painful because I think it has damaged English football for me. It has damaged the image.’
