Why I dropped Thiago Silva: Mauricio Pochettino defends dropping Silva for Arsenal

Thiago Silva’s wife appears to have aimed another dig at Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino on social media following the 5-0 defeat at Arsenal.

Goals from Leandro Trossard, Ben White (two) and Kai Havertz (two) saw Chelsea lose their 11th Premier League game of the season in humiliating fashion.

Tuesday night’s match came just days after the Blues were beaten in the FA Cup semi-finals by Manchester City.

Veteran centre-back Silva started at Wembley but was benched at the Emirates, only coming on in the 78th minute for Alfie Gilchrist after all the goals had been scored.

Shortly after full-time, Belle Silva took to Twitter to post a somewhat cryptic message of the three monkey emojis that symbolise ‘see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil’.

Earlier this season, she called for Pochettino to be sacked, posting on social media: ‘It’s time to change. If you wait any longer it will be too late,’ following the defeat to Wolves in February.

She later apologised for her comments, but just a few days ago she all but confirmed her husband would leave Chelsea in the summer when his contract expires.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Pochettino defended his decision to bench Silva against Arsenal, saying: ‘I need to explain that [Trevoh] Chalobah didn’t play at the start of the season and Silva, a 39-year-old, needs a rest, also.

‘We needed to provide the team with energy. Reece [James] and Malo [Gusto] were not available. We used [Mykhailo] Mudryk for [Cole] Palmer and I think the circumstances to make a decision and make some changes.

‘But I think the most difficult thing is to accept the way we were starting the game. In the last 30 minutes of the first-half, we competed well and the game was even.

‘In the second-half, the way we started, I think in this moment started to suffer a lot and struggled too much in the game.’
