Man City injury news and return for Chelsea FA Cup semi-final. Is Haaland and De Bruyne out?

Manchester City have a triple injury concern over three key players as attention turns back to the FA Cup. Pep Guardiola’s side have a quick chance to bounce back from the disappointment of their Champions League exit this week as they aim to book their place in the FA Cup final.

City take on Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, just three days after their penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Real Madrid. Manuel Akanji, Kevin De Bruyne, and Erling Haaland were all taken off during extra time of that game, raising concern over potential injuries ahead of the weekend.

City will be looking to book their place back at Wembley next month where they will take on either Manchester United or the Championship’s Coventry City who play their semi-final on Sunday. City did have an injury boost for the game against Real with Kyle Walker making his comeback from a hamstring injury. The captain played the full 120 minutes of the match after missing four games.

With that in mind, here’s the latest injury news from City:

Erling Haaland

Injury: Unknown.

Like Akanji, the striker was taken off the pitch before the penalty shootout in the midweek Champions League clash.

What Guardiola has said: “We will see. It was a tough game, 120 minutes. A lot of action, high intensity from both sides. Erling felt something, a muscular issue and that’s why he said he could not continue.”

He added: “The doctor said it was a little bit niggles [with Haaland] and we will see the evolution in the next hours. The amount of games we are playing this season and the previous season and not much recovery and extra time and high intensity and the way we played, put a lot of pressure on our game. They are human beings, not machines. Sometimes the fatigue is there.”

Potential return date: Chelsea (N) – FA Cup semi-final – Saturday, April 20.

Kevin De Bruyne

Injury: Unknown.

De Bruyne was the third player who was unable to continue and was taken off before the penalty shootout.

What Guardiola has said: “Kevin felt exhausted and after what happened with injured for five months, that is normal.” He added: “The amount of games we are playing this season and the previous season and not much recovery and extra time and high intensity and the way we played, put a lot of pressure on our game. They are human beings, not machines. Sometimes the fatigue is there.”

Potential return date: Chelsea (N) – FA Cup semi-final – Saturday, April 20.

Manuel Akanji

Injury: Unknown.

The defender was taken off just before the penalty shootout against Real Madrid, with Guardiola revealing after the game that he asked to be off.

What Guardiola has said: “The amount of games we are playing this season and the previous season and not much recovery and extra time and high intensity and the way we played, put a lot of pressure on our game. They are human beings, not machines. Sometimes the fatigue is there.”
