‘My Favourite Club’: French midfielder reveals he ready to join PSG before Chelsea £40 million move

Ex-Chelsea star, Tiemoue Bakayoko has revealed he initially thought he would be joining French giants, Paris Saint-Germain, before the move to Stamford Bridge happened.

Bakayoko signed for the Blues from AS Monaco for £40m back in 2017.

The midfielder was brought in by then manager, Antonio Conte, as part of efforts to bolster his squad for the 2017-18 season, after winning the Premier League in 2016-17.

However, it turned out to be a rather unfortunate transfer for the player and club, as Bakayoko only played a few games for Chelsea before his eventual departure in 2023.

It must also be said that while he was at Chelsea, Tiemoue Bakayoko never played again after his first season, and was sent out on loan to four different football clubs.

Speaking on his Monaco exit, the 29-year-old told L’Equipe: “I was very reluctant to leave Monaco. I thought I’d stay in France and join the best, PSG. But I always wanted to gain experience abroad, so when Chelsea, my favourite club after PSG, came calling, it was hard to turn them down.

“Antonio Conte really wanted me and followed me when he was at Juventus. We finished fifth in the league and won the cup. I take a lot of positives from my season.”

Bakayoko currently plays for French club, Lorient, where he moved last year.
