Back to EPL – Carlo Ancelotti set for Premier League return after 13 years of Chelsea exit

Carlo Ancelotti makes Premier League admission 13 years after Chelsea exit

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has shared his thoughts on the key difference between La Liga and the Premier League, admitting his belief that the Spanish top flight is more tactically advanced than its English counterpart.

Ancelotti, who is one of the most successful coaches in Europe, was asked about the differences between the two leagues after Real Madrid’s impressive win over Celta Vigo last Sunday. The Italian manager has won major trophies in both leagues, including a Premier League and FA Cup double with Chelsea in 2010.

During a press conference after the match, Ancelotti compared the two top flights: “It’s different. This doesn’t mean better or worse. There are less tactics [in the Premier League].

“On a tactical level, La Liga is much better than the English one. If we talk about intensity, rhythm, the English league may have more. But the Spanish has more tactical quality.”

This season, Ancelotti’s Madrid have taken the lead in La Liga, even after initially trailing behind surprise contenders Girona. Their 4-0 victory over Celta extended their unbeaten run to 22 games.

Ancelotti is the only manager to have won a league title in all of Europe’s major leagues, having won titles with Chelsea, Milan, PSG, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Chelsea may well be looking for a trophy-winning manager of their own in the summer should fortunes not improve under Mauricio Pochettino – though it’s unlikely Ancelotti would be in contention for a return to Stamford Bridge.
