New date for Chelsea vs Tottenham is possible After EPL April TV fixtures announcement

Chelsea and Tottenham fans are still waiting for a new date in the calendar for their London derby clash that was recently postponed. Due to play at Stamford Bridge on Friday, February 23, the game, which was scheduled to be on Sky Sports, didn’t go ahead as originally planned due to the Blues facing Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final that weekend.

Early last week Premier League clubs discovered their schedules for the first three rounds of matches in April. For Tottenham, their game away at West Ham remains on Tuesday, April 2 but it will now start at the later time of 8.15pm and their next fixture at home to Nottingham Forest kicks off at 8pm on Monday, April 8.

Finally, it is an early start for Tottenham fans five days later as the team take on Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in the 12.30pm lunchtime kick-off on Saturday afternoon. Chelsea’s start to April now sees them host Manchester United on Thursday, April 4 at 8.15pm before travelling to Sheffield United three days later for a 5.30pm kick-off.

The game in Sheffield was initially confirmed as a 1.30pm start time when April’s TV picks were announced on Tuesday but three days later there was another change to the time and it didn’t go down well with supporters. The Blues’ third game in April then sees them take on Everton at Stamford Bridge in an 8pm kick-off.

Despite the update regarding those three match rounds, there was no mention of a new confirmed date for the Chelsea vs Tottenham showdown.

What could complicate things going forward is that the Blues may have three games to rearrange due to their participation in the FA Cup. Already needing a new date for their game against Arsenal that was pencilled in for Saturday, March 16 as that is the same weekend Chelsea will be play Leicester City in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, there could be a further game to reschedule if they reach the semi-finals at Wembley on the weekend of Saturday, April 20.

Chelsea are down to play Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex that weekend as thing stand in the calendar. Tottenham’s match against Man City on the same day may also need a new date as Pep Guardiola’s team will be in FA Cup semi-final action providing they beat Newcastle United in the quarter-finals.

In regards to finding a new date for the Chelsea vs Tottenham game, there are a handful of free midweek slots in the calendar for both teams at present as neither side are involved in European competition after missing out on qualification last term. Premier League games in the past haven’t tended to be scheduled on the same night as European fixtures, although the recent Man City vs Brentford and Liverpool vs Luton Town fixtures were played on the night of Champions League matches albeit with the earlier kick-off time of 7.30pm.

UEFA very much want all eyes on their club competitions rather than fans instead deciding to watch Premier League football. However, there may now be no option but to schedule some more Premier League games on the same evening as European football, especially with Chelsea potentially needing to rearrange three league matches in total.

Taking a look at the schedule from April onwards due to the upcoming international break and also needing to give fans a good amount of notice regarding a new date, the only clear dates in the calendar at present that don’t clash with European football are week commencing Monday, April 22 and Monday, May 13.

European quarter-finals are down to be played week commencing Monday, April 8 and 15, with the semi-finals in the week of Monday, April 29 and May 6. If a new date for Chelsea vs Tottenham isn’t confirmed at some point over the next fortnight, things should at least become much clearer in the days after the FA Cup quarter-finals are played.

That way, the Premier League will know how many Tottenham games need to be rescheduled and whether Chelsea have two or three matches that need new dates. Just where exactly the game falls in the calendar could have a big say on Tottenham’s top-four aspirations as they do have Newcastle United, Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool to come in a row in April and early May.

Fans of both Chelsea and Tottenham just want clarity regarding a new date for the fixture after there was no mention of one in the announcement of the first batch of games to be broadcast live in April.
