Huge blow as Seven [7] Chelsea players will miss Newcastle after double return amid Enzo Fernandez worry

Latest Chelsea injury news as seven miss Newcastle after double return amid Enzo Fernandez worry

Mauricio Pochettino continues to have his Chelsea squad plagued by injuries, however some returns could be on the horizon. Robert Sanchez, Marc Cucurella and Thiago Silva were all back in the matchday squad for the 2-2 Premier League draw against Chelsea, however none of the trio featured.

Despite three names being removed from the club’s injury list, Pochettino still has seven players out with potential long-term issues. While Cucurella and Silva were the defensive duo to return, Benoit Badiashile is still out after suffering a groin injury in the FA Cup win against Aston Villa, although he is expected back this month.

With Chelsea not back in action until next Monday evening against Newcastle, Pochettino will be hoping the extra days off will see more players return. The Blues have struggled to cope because of injuries with Pochettino particularly struggling for options in midfield and that was evidenced by Enzo Fernandez being subbed off mid-way through the second half, despite Chelsea being in search of a goal.

“We don’t have the possibility to refresh the players in a key area,” he admitted in a press conference. “After six days, we competed in three really tough games. I think the effort was massive. It was difficult in the second-half to keep the same energy. I think that was important in the game.”

Romeo Lavia, Lesley Ugochukwu and Carney Chukwuemeka are the midfielders currently missing through injury, with a return for any members of the trio anytime soon looking unlikely. Elsewhere, Reece James continues to recover from a plaguing hamstring problem, which he had surgery to fix back in December.

The club captain has provided numerous updates on his rehabilitation with Pochettino offering a verdict on a potential return date. “I think he feels well. We were talking and he has started his recovery, one day closer to being with the group,” Pochettino admitted last week.

“This is really positive and we are all positive around him, we are going to help. It is always tough for a player with a very complicated, difficult season for him. Now’s the process to start to recover.

“One day less until he is part of the group. The most important thing is to start to solve the problem and, of course, help him to be strong, being positive.” Christopher Nkunku is another who has endured an injury-riddled season with three separate issues seeing him make just two starts during his debut season.

When offering an injury update last month, Pochettino said of Nkunku: “He suffered a problem in his hamstring and we will see in a few weeks if he can be again available. But yes, now he’s doing recovery. A little bit unlucky, bad luck because to suffer another setback. It’s difficult to accept another injury and to delay to play more consistent.”

Wesley Fofana has missed the entirety of the season with a serious ACL injury and he may not feature for Chelsea competitively until the following season.
