Pochettino pleads for more time to build a team like Liverpool after Carabao Cup disappointment

Mauricio Pochettino has reiterated the need for both Chelsea fans and owners of the club to continue to give him their support, despite the disappointment of not winning the Carabao Cup on Sunday evening.

Mauricio Pochettino saw his Chelsea side slump to a 1-0 loss against Liverpool at Wembley, despite having a more expensive team than the Merseysiders.

Virgil van Dijk scored the winning goal of the match in extra time, just as a penalty shootout seemed to be the inevitable outcome.

Chelsea have been criticised in the aftermath of the defeat— for bottling a sixth cup final in just five years, while some fans are again demanding for Pochettino’s sack as head coach, but the Argentine insists he needs more time to build a winning team— while comparing the club’s struggles under him to what Liverpool went through with Jurgen Klopp, before they found their way to the top.

He said, as quoted by the Evening Standard: “To compete at this level against a team that is in the last five, six, seven years is competing for big things, it is about to arrive here first and then feel what it means to play for a big trophy.

“I remember after three or four years [into Jurgen Klopp’s tenure] Liverpool lose the Champions League [Final], they lose the Europa League [Final], and they believe in the project.

“They were in the next seasons stronger until they got what they wanted. That is a good example if we want to challenge a team like Liverpool. It is not to be frustrated today because we didn’t win the trophy. It is about to take the example that we need to keep believing.”
