Wasteful Chelsea lost 1-0 to Liverpool in Carabao cup final

Chelsea’s inability to put the ball in the net went into overdrive during their Carabao Cup final clash with Liverpool, and Gary Neville, who was on commentary, could barely believe it.

Gary Neville couldn’t believe his eyes as Chelsea squandered several gilt edged chances to take the lead against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

The Blues have a had problems scoring goals all season, but took their goal shyness to dizzying new heights in the closing stages of normal time. Cole Palmer, Malo Gusto and Christopher Nkunku all peppered Caoimhin Kelleher’s goal with shots from close range, but were all denied in astonishingly fashion.

Neville, who was on co-commentary for Sky Sports, shouted down the microphone: “What the hell has just happened?” as colleague Jamie Carragher let out a shocked, and probably quite relieved, “ooooh” noise.

came after Chelsea had a goal ruled out for the narrowest offsides, and after Conor Gallagher, Axel Disasi and Enzo Fernandez spurned golden opportunities from close range.

Liverpool can count themselves unlucky too. Virgil van Dijk’s headed goal was ruled out following a controversial offside call involving Wataru Endo, who impeded Levi Colwill’s path off the ball, and fans think Moises Caicedo was lucky to escape a red after felling Ryan Gravenberch, who had to be stretchered off, with an ugly studs-up challenge in the first half.

The last three finals contested between Liverpool and Chelsea have finished 0-0 in normal time. The Reds did the double over the Blues in 2022, beating them on penalties in both the League Cup final and the FA Cup final.

Chelsea have scored just 42 Premier League goals this season, and their top scorer is Palmer who has 10 to his name, most of which have been penalties. They scored just 38 league goals last season and haven’t scored above 80 league goals since their title-winning campaign in 2016/17.
