Chelsea Star Raises the Stakes: Carabao Cup Victory Could Eclipse Champions League Glory

Ben Chilwell has claimed that winning the Carabao Cup on Sunday would “arguably be bigger than the Champions League” for Chelsea’s young squad.

The 27 year old is preparing to lead Chelsea out at Wembley against Liverpool where he could be the Blues oldest player if Thiago Silva doesn’t recover from injury and Raheem Sterling gets overlooked.

The left back has yet to get his hands on a domestic trophy with the London club having lost all three Wembley finals he’s appeared in following a £50m move from Leicester in the summer of 2020.

Chilwell was part of the side that won the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel in 2021, beating Manchester City 1-0 and believes victory on Sunday could arguably be bigger than that night in Porto.

Speaking to the Daily Mail he said: “Not in prestige but in the way we want the club to go, the prestige of the Champions League is higher but this is arguably more important in terms of where the club is now.”

“With the group we have now, a young group, where there have been ups and downs this season, to get this one as a team and staff and with the fans, it would be massive. Arguably bigger than the Champions League.”

The England international is getting back to his best having been sidelined for large parts of the season with a hamstring injury which has limited him to just 15 appearances in all competitions for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
