Here’s Why Mauricio Pochettino Keeps Playing Colwill as Left-Back

Some Chelsea fans are puzzled by Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to consistently deploy Levi Colwill as a left-back this season. Colwill, only 20 years old, initially rose through the ranks of the Blues’ academy as a highly-regarded central defender.

Despite his promising performances in that position during loan spells at Huddersfield Town and Brighton in recent years, he has predominantly played as a full-back rather than a center-back since joining Chelsea’s first team this season.

Although the young English talent has demonstrated stability in the left-back role and displayed commendable versatility, concerns linger among supporters. There is worry that this tactical choice may not be maximizing his potential during a crucial period of his development.

Mauricio Pochettino’s attempt to address a weakness in Chelsea’s lineup has been elucidated in a recent report by The Daily Mail. The somewhat unconventional tactical decision to consistently play Colwill as a left-back is believed to be driven, in part, by the team’s overall deficiency in height.

The starting lineup in the recent 2-0 defeat against Everton featured only four players who stood at 6 feet or taller, prompting Pochettino to strategically incorporate Colwill into the left-back position.
