Pochettino urged to stick with these two Chelsea defenders ahead of Carabao Cup final

Pochettino urged to stick with these two Chelsea defenders after a brilliant performance in Man City draw

Mauricio Pochettino has to stick with Chelsea pair Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill, following their brilliant performance during the Blues’ 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Saturday evening, according to ESPN pundit, Steve Nicol.

With Thiago Silva absent as a result of injury, Pochettino was forced to make two changes to the side that beat Crystal Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park last Monday, with Colwill coming in to partner Disasi in central defence, and Raheem Sterling replacing Noni Madueke.

The decision proved to be a good one for Chelsea, as both defenders put on arguably their best performances of the season to help the Blues earn a point at the Etihad stadium, even though they could have won it.

Disasi made 16 clearances for Chelsea – the most by any player from the West London club in the last eight years, while Colwill made 10 – the second highest on the evening.

For Nicol, the two defenders showed a lot of class against the best team in the world at the moment, and he now wants Pochettino to make them a regular defensive duo for Chelsea moving forward.

He said: “Axel Disasi almost couldn’t put a foot wrong. And Colwill, this playing Colwill at left-back for most of the season, I hope that Pochettino realises what he’s got now because this pairing has shown what they’re capable of. So how about you stick with them?”

While we can’t tell whether or not Pochettino will be willing to heed Nicol’s advice as his side navigates the rest of the season, we believe that he too saw the chemistry and understanding between Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill on Saturday.

Pochettino will certainly have taken some notes, which we can all now hope translates into something more positive for the club for the future.
