Why this Chelsea player Faces Career’s End After Explosive Manchester City Showdown

Carragher Says This Chelsea Star Faces Career’s End After Explosive Manchester City Showdown

Jamie Carragher says Thiago Silva’s days at Chelsea are numbered after he was upstaged by his younger teammates against Manchester City.

Silva hobbled off injured during last Monday night’s game against Crystal Palace, and though he was ruled out for the trip to City he could well be fit in time for the Carabao Cup final.

But some fans will be hoping the 39-year-old doesn’t play against Liverpool after the centre-back partnership of Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill performed brilliantly at the Etihad.

Their stern defence helped the Blues earn a point against Pep Guardiola’s men, with Rodri scoring late on after Raheem Sterling’s opener in the first-half.

Disasi especially earned acclaim for his efforts, with Carragher naming him player of the match and likening the 25-year-old to Chelsea legend John Terry.

Silva is of course one of the best defenders of his generation, and has been a fantastic player for the Blues since moving to Stamford Bridge in 2020, and was even voted the club’s Player of the Year last season.

However, he has not looked 100% this season, yet Mauricio Pochettino has continued to rely on him, with the Brazilian playing nearly every single minute of the Premier League campaign.

But Liverpool legend Carragher believes his time is now up, saying on Sky Sports: ‘Last couple of big away games going back to Aston Villa in the [FA] Cup and here today when Thiago Silva has not been involved.

‘He’s been brilliant for Chelsea since he’s come in. But I think with his age, his contract’s up at the end of the season and when you see those two players [Disasi and Colwill] in together…

‘I think it makes it very difficult for Thiago Silva to come back into the team between now and the end of the season – unless someone gets injured.

‘Chelsea have the cup final but I certainly think they have to start building something for the future. There’s not an awful lot to play for after the cup final.

‘I think looking at those two in a partnership and maybe another young centre-back in the squad, the days of Thiago Silva playing at Chelsea have got to come to an end.’

The Blues do have several other young, promising centre-backs in their squad most notably Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana so they would be well covered if and when Silva leaves.

The veterans future has been the subject of much speculation, even more so after his wife Belle criticised Pochettino on social media after the 4-2 loss to Wolves, something she later apologised for.
