Chelsea told £100m star striker is not the right player for them to sign

ESPN pundit and former Chelsea man, Craig Burley has said he doesn’t think that Ivan Toney is the right striker for the Blues.

Toney, who has now scored two goals in two games since returning from his eight-month match ban by the Premier League last month, continues to be linked with a move away from Brentford, with Chelsea and Arsenal believed to be his biggest suitors.

The rumours around the 27-year-old’s future with the Bees became even more intensified after his coach, Thomas Frank recently admitted he could actually be sold this summer.

Toney is said to be valued at £100m, and some reports have suggested that Chelsea have held internal discussions about signing the England striker, but Burley has now cast doubt on the ability of the Brentford captain to fit into the plans of his former club.

“If I was Chelsea I’d have to ask myself a question. If I want to be back amongst the big boys, if they’re spending that kind of money that’s where they want to be, is Ivan Toney going to be the answer? Really, is he at that level? I don’t think so,” Burley told ESPN.

“I think Chelsea will go with someone with more perceived gravitas. [Victor] Osimhen, a big name.”

Toney scored 20 league goals for Brentford last season, so he certainly know how to find the back of the net. But for us, the real question is whether he can replicate that success at Chelsea, where the expectations are obviously higher.

We have seen many good forwards come and struggle at Stamford Bridge, and while we agree that we need a lethal finisher, we also think that in getting one, the club must make sure they get it right.
