Jason Cundy claims this £50m Chelsea player can’t last an entire game
Jason Cundy has made a case for why Ben Chilwell cannot play a full game for Chelsea for now.
Chilwell was involved for the Blues, as they were thrashed 4-1 by Liverpool on Wednesday. He was in fact captain of the team during the game at Anfield.
The 27-year-old however, couldn’t last the full 90 minutes, and was hauled off at half-time after gifting the ball to Liverpool on many occasions.
Liverpool were totally dominant against Chelsea in every area of the pitch from the blow of the first whistle.
Cundy was discussing the Blues’ performance on talkSPORT on Thursday, and when he was asked to explain what he thought the problem with Mauricio Pochettino’s side was, he said: “There is a number of reasons. The recruitment clearly hasn’t had an impact. They’ve gone down a certain route with young players. Well, those young players, what you can’t give them is experience. And even though we had Sterling and Silva starting, Chilwell obviously isn’t fit enough to carry through 90 minutes.
“They’re all 22s and 23s, and even though this squad has been built with the vision. We won’t know whether this would work for another three or four years. But what we do know, right now ain’t working.”
To be fair to Chilwell though, the Liverpool game was only his second start for the Blues since returning from a hamstring injury that he picked up earlier in the season.
Prior to the Liverpool match, the left-back had also started for Chelsea in the 6-1 Carabao Cup semi-final thrashing of Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge, where he pretty much ran the show.
It’s a known fact by many that a fully fit Chilwell is a completely special player, but unfortunately, the defender is still trying to work his way back to that level, which means that Pochettino will have to find ways to make his team work without his vice-captain for now.
