Klopp gives verdict on two Chelsea players he failed to sign

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said he feels lucky to have missed out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, who he claims were never Liverpool’s main targets last summer.

Chelsea ended up signing both midfielders for a combined £173m fee, after they rejected the chance to play for the Reds.

Klopp has however claimed that Liverpool were actually interested in Jude Bellingham first, and only tried to settle for Caicedo and Lavia after the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder revealed he was joining Real Madrid.

“We were interested in Bellingham, realised it would not happen and we thought we could maybe do [Moises] Caicedo so went in … (but) he had an emotional agreement already with Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino,” Klopp said at his Tuesday press conference.

“Then [Romeo] Lavia had his own reasons – so we were there. Then we found our top solution.”

He then added: “We found Wataru (Endo), we already knew Macca (Alexis Mac Allister) could play the position and Dom (Dominik Szoboszlai) was always on my radar.

“If one of the £100 million (signings) had worked, there’s no chance to do another. That’s what I meant when I said we are so lucky. Everything in the ‘if not scenario’ worked out.”
