Dashed Dreams: Top Insider Shatters Hopes for Elite Striker’s Immediate Arrival.
David Ornstein’s transfer summary of the final days of the window seems to have killed off any final hopes of Chelsea signing Karim Benzema.
The Athletic’s big transfer specialist today dismissed the idea that the former Real Madrid striker could join us with a simply “he is not joining.”
As he puts it, Chelsea “plan to avoid costly moves for older players and prioritise emerging elite talent like Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.”
We never believed the rumours from the start, this ownership has moved very strongly in the direction of signing young players, signing players on long contracts, and signing players for small wages. Benzema would go totally the other way in all 3 areas, so it was always a bit of a non starter.
It’s a bit funny to pick out Palmer and Gusto – if all our signings had been that good, we’d be in a great place. Sadly those two successes are the exception rather than the norm of our transfer policy so far.
