Pochettino breaks silence on need to sign a new striker after what happened against Aston Villa

Mauricio Pochettino has hinted that Chelsea may have to sign a new striker before the end of the January transfer window, following his side’s goalless draw with Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday.

The Blues dominated, and created many chances for large parts of the game, especially in the first half, but poor finishing, along with the brilliance of Emiliano Martinez prevented Chelsea from scoring.

Scoring goals have been a major issue for Chelsea this season, with the West London club said to be looking to bolster their attacking options in the ongoing January transfer window.

Pochettino was asked if his side’s inability to score from their chances on Friday meant they were now going to try and sign a striker before January 31, and the Argentine replied: “Yes, but for both sides, no?

“They have amazing players in attack, different players, and they didn’t score and we kept a clean sheet.

“These types of games are even and of course when you face a team like Aston Villa, it is always difficult.

“Of course, we didn’t score but we created chances.

“I trust and believe in my players, for sure, playing this way, we are going to score. We came from Tuesday where we scored six. I think the keeper is an amazing keeper, Emiliano, he was really, really good.

“Yes, sometimes you need some luck to score.”
