Victor Osimhen breaks silence on transfer to Chelsea and his decision, confirmed leaving Napoli

Victor Osimhen claims he already knows the next step in his career, having only recently signed a new contract with Napoli.

The Nigeria international is currently representing his nation at the Africa Cup of Nations, but has nevertheless drawn speculation with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea both said to be in the market for a forward. The 25-year-old has provided a goal and assist in the opening three matches of Nigeria’s campaign in the Ivory Coast to guide them through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Osimhen has built a stellar reputation during his time with Napoli off the back of a record that has seen him notch 67 strikes and 17 assists across 119 outings for the Italians. That encouraged club chief Aurelio De Laurentiis to tie his prize asset down to a new deal.

The Serie A ace extended his contract until June 2026 but is now believed to have a release clause worth in excess of £100million. While a move may seem unlikely this month, the prospect of moving on still remains in the summer.

While there seems to be uncertainty around Osimhen’s future, he claims to already knows his next step. He told CBS Sports Golazo: “The rumour is going around about me linked with the Premier League, but of course, when you are one of the hottest strikers on the globe you expect this type of thing. The EPL is one of the biggest, the best league in the whole world.

“For me, at Napoli I signed a new contract, I am enjoying my time there. At the end of the season… I already made up my mind. I already know what I want to do with my career. Since I’ve started I’ve been the one taking my own decisions, everything is working out well for me even though I started it didn’t go as well as planned.

“I already had my plan, I already know the next step I want to take. For now I want to finish the season strong, relax with my daughter, think about my life and then come out with the decision I have already made.”

Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has urged his former club to sign a prolific striker this month. He said: “We need a striker, simple as that. We need a good one. If you watch Haaland, most of his goals, where are they? In the f***ing box. The box. So that’s where we need a striker to score goals – to get in the f***ing box.”
