Mauricio Pochettino reveals plan for Cesare Casadei after recalling Chelsea youngster
Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Cesare Casadei will be part of Chelsea’s first-team squad for the remainder of the season after recalling the midfielder from his loan at Leicester.
The 21-year-old made 22 Championship appearances for the Foxes, who currently top the table, in the first half of the campaign, while he also turned out twice in the Carabao Cup and netted in the FA Cup.
But his time at the King Power Stadium was somewhat surprisingly cut short on Friday when Chelsea made use of a break clause in his loan to bring Casadei back to Stamford Bridge.
Pochettino has been rather light on midfield options recently, with Carney Chukwuemeka – who is predominantly an offensive option – the only midfielder on his bench when the side took on Fulham just over a week ago.
The Argentine coach intends to make use of Casadei between now and the end of the season, while Diego Moreira – who was recalled from his loan at Lyon earlier on Monday – could also feature.
Asked if the pair are in his plans for the rest of the season, Pochettino replied: ‘Yes, both we need to assess now. I think both have come back from their loans.
‘I think good potential. I think they are going to be part of our squad and then the decision is going to be whether they are going to be part of the team every week and every game.
‘But I think it’s good news because we were suffering too many injuries, so to recover players from loans is important for us.’
Asked for his thoughts on how Casadei in particular performed at Leicester, Pochettino continued: ‘I think it was fantastic, he was doing really well.
‘But that’s no surprise because in pre-season he did really, really well.
‘He was one of the players that we suffered a little bit to allow him to go, and now hope he can help.
‘It’s true that tomorrow it’s not possible because he has already played for Leicester in the Carabao Cup and in the FA Cup also, so for Friday he’s not available either.
‘But yes on the Premier League, maybe he can be involved with the squad.’
Casadei is cup-tied for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup showdown with Middlesbrough on Tuesday night as well as their FA Cup fourth-round clash against Aston Villa on Friday, which means an away trip to Anfield on January 31 is his first opportunity to be involved in the matchday squad.
