Chelsea’s most threatening lineup based solely on attacking prowess
We’ve been looking at some stats on FBRef and wondering what Chelsea team you’d end up with if you went purely on their expected goals and expected assists this season, adjusted for the minutes they’ve played.
Here’s the team you would get if you picked a team just on their combined goalscoring and goal assisting threat, ignoring penalties (npxG+xA/90):
In goal it’s a toss up between Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic as they have not a single shred of xG or xA between them – something for the sporting directors to address this summer maybe?
At left back, Ben Chilwell is an easy choice. He’s the second most threatening player in the whole squad by this metric, in fact. Reece James beats out Malo Gusto at right back.
In the middle of defence we have Levi Colwill, whose numbers are helped by playing at left back we imagine, and Benoit Badiashile who has an assist despite making just 5 starts.
Your midfield would be Enzo Fernandez, Conor Gallagher and Carney Chukwuemeka – not very defensively sound, admittedly.
Then in attack, Nicolas Jackson (our most potent player in non penalty xG plus xA per 90) would be flanked by Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku.
