Chelsea cited the player in their report on the £87m transfer target
It was interesting to read Nizaar Kinsella’s piece in the Evening Standard about Chelsea’s reported interest in Victor Gyokeres, the Sporting striker with an £87m release clause.
Rumours spread from Portugal yesterday morning that the Blues were keen on the Swede, but by the afternoon several sources were rubbishing those same claims.
Kinsella’s piece, we note, said “Chelsea have ruled out a January move,” rather than citing a source of some sort.
“The Blues have denies any interest in the 25 year old,” it goes on. This seems unusually direct, and seems to indicate that the club have disclosed this to him and have been happy to be quoted on it.
Directly following that, the piece makes further claims. It says that Gyokeres is not one of our targets, despite the club’s prioritising of signing a new striker. We’re more inclined to take that as gospel if the club are being directly cited elsewhere.
A briefing from the club would explain why so many reporters had this news at the same time yesterday. Perhaps this is going to be the way things are done from now on?
