Chelsea reveals Ian Maatsen’s release clause as they stand firm on a summer sale

Chelsea reveals Ian Maatsen’s release clause as they stand firm on a summer sale following his loan to Borussia Dortmund

Chelsea will demand Ian Maatsen’s entire £35million release clause if he is to be sold this summer.

The 21-year-old defender signed a new contract extension until 2026 when agreeing his loan move to Borussia Dortmund.

The Blues were initially reluctant to loan out the Netherlands Under-21 international, but the extension helps protect the club’s investment.

They expect Maatsen’s loan move to Dortmund will help increase his value by playing more matches and hope to bank the full £35m, with that release clause becoming active in the summer.

Dortmund have no first refusal on Maatsen, and there is no option in the loan deal to make the move a permanent one at the end of the season.

The potential sale would represent ‘pure profit’ on the club’s accounts as Maatsen joined Chelsea as a youth signing in 2018, which means he is effectively considered an academy player.

Dortmund are unlikely to meet the asking price in the summer, with few clubs outside of the Premier League able to pay the fee required to secure Maatsen at the end of the season.

Maatsen made his debut against Darmstadt this weekend and played the full 90 minutes in Dortmund’s 3-0 win over Darmstadt in their first match back after the winter break.

His side would allow Chelsea more room to spend this summer while avoiding sanctions in the strict, new Premier League profit and Sustainability regulations.

Chelsea hope to spend big again next summer with a striker, left-back and central defender likely to be prioritised.

Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Brighton’s Evan Ferguson are among the strikers admired but would all prove costly signings.

In defence, Jean-Clair Todibo at Nice and Ousmane Diomande at Sporting are considered potential targets.
