Chelsea move to sign more accessible short-term striker options; insider comments

Expert insider comments on Chelsea’s more accessible short-term striker options

Chelsea may well look to the ‘short-term’ transfer market this month if they are to bring in a new striker.

That area on the pitch has become a priority for Chelsea, but they might have to wait until the summer to get the ultimate priority target due to lack of availability and opportunities right now.

But it seems the club are still pondering over bringing in a new striker this month regardless, and to do so they might need to look at a short-term option coming in on loan.

A lot has been said about this potential option today, and players who are currently playing in Saudi Arabia have been mentioned as possible targets for Chelsea. To be specific, both Karim Benzema and Roberto Firmino has been mentioned as players that Chelsea could turn to this month as a short term fix.

Expert insider Ben Jacobs has been speaking about this today in his latest exclusive and extensive Chelsea FC column for SPTC.

He says: “As it stands, there have been no formal approaches for either Al-Ittihad’s Karim Benzema or Al-Ahli’s Bobby Firmino.

“What I would say is Firmino is easier to get because Al-Ahli are genuinely open to a loan. It’s the club trying to offload the Brazilian because he’s not proven a fit with Matthias Jaissle’s style.

“Benzema is a much harder player to sign because, regardless of Marcelo Gallardo’s view, or even the French striker allegedly trying to drive a move, PIF and the Ministry of Sport would have to sanction it. Saudi sources make it clear they don’t want Benzema to become the ‘poster boy’ for an early Saudi exit. The optics of him leaving only half a season into his time with Al-Ittihad could be damaging for the league.

“Either way, Chelsea haven’t yet made an approach. Let’s see if that changes in the next two weeks.”
