Chelsea player eyes semi-final after more than 3 months absence
After more than 3 months out, Ben Chilwell was back in action today, coming on as a sub to play the final thirty minutes of a narrow win over Fulham.
He got superb reception from Stamford Bridge and took the armband back from Conor Gallagher in a great moment which felt like it lifted the whole team.
At full time Chilwell spoke to TNT Sport on the pitch at full time after a breathless finale:
“It’s been a while. I’m just happy to be back. It’s a big win and it was important after Boro that we bounced back. Hopefully we can go on and get a result in the second leg now,” the left back said.
“We are a young team, and we need a bit more leadership, and I want to take on that role. But it’s a very talented squad and we’re going to get there.”
We would imagine he needs one more appearance off the bench before he’s considered ready for a start, but this is an important step. That semi final he’s talking about, which is in ten days, could line up perfectly for a first start for him.
The question is, when he’s fit, where Chilwell will be used. He came on on the left wing today, and that won’t be popular if it continues.
