The absent striker requires an upgrade despite the team looking worse without him
Usually when players are unavailable, they get better and better in the minds of their fans.
Nothing does more for a player’s reputation than a long absence. We’re seeing it right now with Nicolas Jackson. There were plenty of complaints about his flaws when he was in the team. Now he’s gone to AFCON, the team look even worse and people are begging for his return.
It’s interesting timing, then for the Daily Mail to claim that there is a “growing belief at Stamford Bridge that they requite an upgrade on the Senegal international.”
We don’t doubt that’s true. In fact, we don’t think Jackson was ever supposed to be first choice long term. He was a good value, raw talent with lots of potential. It wouldn’t be surprising if the plan all along was to buy an elite striker when one became available.
That won’t stop fans counting the days until his return as the team struggles without a focal point.
