Why Winger with 14 league goals faces Chelsea’s toughest team-sheet yet
Mauricio Pochettino is known for his man management above all else, and his work with Noni Madueke seemed to have been going well.
The winger has been a bit of an outcast, with some comments from Pochettino revealing that he wasn’t too happy with the winger’s efforts in training. Things reached a head just after Christmas, when Ian Maatsen got a chance to play on the wing while Madueke was benched.
That seemed to spark something – the winger came on and made a winning contribution in that game, which in turn earned him a start against Luton, where he scored again, just his 14th career league goal (TM)
It all seemed to have worked perfectly, with the youngster primed to take on Preston on Saturday.
But against expectations, he was left out.
Tonight he has another great chance to make an impact in a higher stakes game against Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup semi final. It will be very interesting to see if Pochettino picks him. If Madueke gets the chance and does the business, he will have taken a crucial step forward in his battle with Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk to be the man playing opposite Cole Palmer.
