Mauricio Pochettino shares why he took off big threat on the right

Malo Gusto is quickly becoming one of Chelsea’s most important players, especially in a game like yesterday’s.

All too often this season injuries have meant we’ve lined up with no natural full backs, and the team accordingly lacking much width. When Gusto is in there, at least his side provides some forward impetus.

He got up and down plenty yesterday, including on one charge where he slightly overran the ball and was sent flying by a solid Middlesbrough defender.

Gusto was left in a heap, and it looked like his toe or foot had been caught. He played on, but we feared the worst when he was subbed off later.

Luckily after the game Mauricio Pochettino confirmed it was just a precautionary change due to the minutes Gusto was accumulating:

“No, no [there is no injury]. Malo Gusto came off as a precaution, it’s a busy period and he’s playing a lot. We wanted to protect him.”

There was no injury – although the way things have gone this season, there may well be a fresh one by this weekend.
