Pochettino displays ruthlessness by excluding academy striker in new setup

All the talk in the last week has been about Armando Broja, and how he’s finally getting the chance to be number one again, more than a year after his last consistent run in the team. After playing and scoring on Saturday, and with Nicolas Jackson away, we all thought we’d be getting a few Broja games.

Instead, probably looking back at his otherwise weak showing on the weekend, Mauricio Pochettino has taken the striker out of the starting lineup, instead playing a front 3 of Noni Madueke, Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer.

We’re not sure if one will be the nominal “false 9” or if they’ll just interchange. But it’s a big call from Pochettino to change his system in a semi final. It shows the comments he made about Broja’s flaws really meant something. The youngster will still get more chances – expect him back in the team to face Fulham this weekend – but it’s a blow to his confidence without doubt.
