Why Chelsea should avoid deploying young left back and Brazilian midfielder this month

The first week of January at Chelsea has seen several players recalled from loans that weren’t working out for anyone.

That includes Andrey Santos and Zak Sturge, who were not being used by Nottingham Forest and Peterborough respectively. They’ve both rejoined first team training with Mauricio Pochettino’s main group.

With three cup games coming up, there will be a huge temptation for the coach to use them, even if just for a few minutes off the bench. But the coach must resist that temptation. If they play for Chelsea it will be their second team of the season, and FIFA rules mean they can’t play for three. So any minute played by them would rule out a loan for the rest of the season.

Given that both have been recalled specifically because they’re not playing enough, it would be madness to lock them in to another 6 months rotting on the bench just for the sake of some cup minutes.

So while Pochettino will enjoy having them as bodies in training, that’s as much as he will get out of them.
