Chelsea receives transfer offer for Thiago Silva, needs a replacement before considering his departure
John Cross is reporting in the Daily Mirror that Thiago Silva has been offered a return to Fluminense this summer.
A return to his native Brazil has long been speculated, but this is perhaps the first time we’ve seen a top source put their money where their mouth is and claim it’s actually been offered.
Silva has remained a regular starter for Mauricio Pochettino this season despite having some dodgy moments. His experience and leadership is clearly considered indispensable in an otherwise callow squad.
If Silva is allowed to go in the summer – and the timing certainly seems right – we’d would expect to see another experienced old head brought in much as he was back in 2020. Despite his recent drop off he’s been a superb free transfer overall and will be much missed as a dressing room influence.
Silva’s deal expires this summer, so in the end it will be down to him to decide. We’re sure Chelsea will happily offer him another year if he understands his playing role is likely to be reduced.
