£10.6m signing appears as a lost boy among Chelsea’s ranks
A year ago, things were getting really crazy.
We expected Chelsea to sign a player or two, but they did more than that.
Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez and Noni Madueke signed, with Joao Felix coming in on loan and Andrey Santos signing but staying in Brazil.
It was a huge mistake, filling the dressing room to bursting point with total strangers and killing any chance Graham Potter had of forging a success.
Some of those player had a clear pathway though – Enzo has played most games since joining, and Badiashile would likely have been in a similar position had he not picked up a few injuries.
But David Datro Fofana looks as mystifying a move now as it did then. Joining for £10.6m from Molde, he never looked like he was ready to play for Chelsea – which was odd as we desperately needed a good striker.
This season he’s struggled on loan at Union Berlin, and the rumours are now that he’s going to switch to Sevilla in January – another team doing badly.
There never felt like there was a pathway for him, and there still doesn’t.
