Chelsea’s huge asking price for the 21-year-old is deterring potential transfer
Borussia Dortmund want to sign Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, but the German giants look to have hit a bit of a stumbling block.
Ian Maatsen seems to be edging closer to the Chelsea exit door after being overlooked by Mauricio Pochettino this season.
According to Sky Sports Germany, Dortmund are in talks with the Blues and the left-back over a potential deal.
However, the same outlet has also claimed that it is still pending because Chelsea are insisting on a loan with an obligation to buy in the summer for €30m (£26m).
Maatsen will be desperate for that to be ironed out, with the 21-year-old having only made one start in the Premier League this season.
Chelsea’s asking price for Ian Maatsen reasonable
Honestly, it is not ludicrous for Chelsea to demand just over £25m for Maatsen.
The Dutchman is a versatile player, able to play at left-back and on the wing. And at just 21 years of age, he has potential.
It appears, though, that Dortmund may not be able to pay the amount of money Chelsea want at the end of Maatsen’s loan.
You cannot rule out a compromise, however. Maatsen is a fringe player under Pochettino and the Netherlands U21 international is probably desperate for game time. It means a transfer is best for all here, so maybe something will eventually be worked out.
Ultimately, Maatsen is surely going to want the move because of his lack of opportunities this term and Chelsea do not really need him it seems, so an exit does make sense.
In terms of incomings at Stamford Bridge this month, while one defender may leave, one could arrive. Chelsea continue to be linked with centre-backs, and that includes Sporting Lisbon’s Ousmane Diomande. Once again, then, the Blues could be at the centre of yet another transfer window.
