Chelsea seeks a £35m player as Reece James’ replacement

Chelsea could reportedly sign a new right-back to replace Reece James.

Reece James recently underwent surgery on his hamstring and will now be out of action for a while.

With the 24-year-old picking up so many injuries, Defensa Central are now reporting that Chelsea are seriously considering signing Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong to replace him.

The Spanish outlet has also claimed that Real Madrid have been following the Dutchman and that he has a €40m (£34.6m) release clause in his contract.

He has really impressed under Xabi Alonso this season, coming up with 11 goal contributions in 16 Bundesliga appearances

Chelsea considering Jeremie Frimpong

Frimpong has really proven to be a top full-back at Leverkusen, so it is no surprise that Chelsea have him on their radar.

However, the Blues should wait to see how James recovers from his hamstring surgery before signing a new right-back.

If the England international comes back and can prove his fitness, there will not be a need for Chelsea to buy another player in his position.

When James is fit and at his best, it is hard to find a more complete full-back in the Premier League.

In his side’s 4-4 draw with Manchester City last month, he was great both defensively and offensively, making plenty of tackles and registering one assist during the game at Stamford Bridge.

As well as James, Chelsea also have Malo Gusto, with the French youngster really showing Mauricio Pochettino what he can do in the Blues’ recent Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Newcastle United.

He came on in the second half and made Pochettino’s team more of a threat. It was his ball into the box that Kieran Trippier could not deal with properly, allowing Mykhailo Mudryk to sneak in and bury the opportunity that was presented to him.
