Christopher Nkunku shares a message that will make Chelsea fans ecstatic, dropping a big hint about a comeback from injury
Chelsea will be hoping Christopher Nkunku is back in time for the Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Newcastle United. The Blues advanced beyond the fourth round with a comfortable win at Stamford Bridge over Blackburn Rovers with Benoit Badiashile and Raheem Sterling on target.
A first start in over five months was marked in style by Badiashile with a dominant display seeing him end with a goal and a clean sheet. Prior to that clash, the Frenchman was one of only a few players yet to play a competitive game under Pochettino with Nkunku being one of the others.
The 25-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer but picked up a knee injury in pre-season against Borussia Dortmund that required surgery to fix. Nkunku has already missed nearly three months of action, however Pochettino is hopeful he can be back this month.
Speaking ahead of last weekend’s Brentford game, he revealed: “He is doing well, I think he is close, I hope he can be involved soon. Maybe after the international break. Maybe not not sure.” On the impact he can have, Pochettino added: “He was the player when you see the goals from last season, it’s a player that can provide goals and I think we are missing goals. We think he’s a player that can be important for us because he proved he can score.
“We cannot complain. We need to work. Things can happen. We are looking forward to recover him and see him help us score more goals.” In the wake of the victory over Blackburn, Nkunku posted to his Instagram account congratulating his team-mates with the caption, “next round, [white tick and clapping emoji],” hinting that he may be involved in that very game.
Just a few hours later, Nkunku sent another message on social media this time directed at his former club RB Leipzig. The German outfit were celebrating the one-year anniversary of Nkunku’s balloon celebration with the versatile attacker replying to the post with three heart emojis and reposting it on his story, again with three heart emojis.
Pochettino and Chelsea will love the sight of that celebration and they will certainly be hoping to see it on numerous occasions with the Blues’ goal scoring woes carrying over from last season. Nicolas Jackson was acquired alongside Nkunku but he has struggled to make a lasting impact, however the signing of Cole Palmer appears a brilliant one with the 21-year-old delivering yet another strong display.
