Chelsea owners Clearlake Capital are among the Premier League owners pushing hard to end the 3pm Saturday blackout on games shown live in the UK and to increase the number of live games shown every season from 200 to beyond 300, according to the Daily Mail.
A Sunday night exclusive has revealed that there’s a major effort developing among owners of several of the top clubs in the country to scrap the long running blackout rule when the current TV deal ends in 2029.
Owners like Todd Boehly are desperate to see the value of their investment increase, and the fastest way to do that is to increase the number of Premier League games shown domestically – a number that is currently limited by the government ruling that no live football can be shown between 2.45 and 5.15 on Saturdays in order to protect lower league attendances.
It feels like a rule that can only last so long, especially with the sheers weight of money behind changing it.
