🚨 Just Hours Before the Tragedy: Diogo Jota’s Final Call to a Close Friend Revealed 💔

Diogo Jota spoke with a close friend on the phone just hours before the car crash that claimed his and his brother’s lives.

Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, lost their lives in a car accident during the early hours of Thursday.

Diogo Jota reportedly spoke with a close friend just hours before the tragic car crash that claimed his life along with his brother, Andre Silva.

The fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning on the A52 road in Zamora, located in northwestern Spain.

Preliminary reports from police indicate that the Lamborghini they were traveling in suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle, causing it to burst into flames shortly afterward.

Eyewitnesses who alerted emergency services described the vehicle as being completely engulfed in fire.

The Spanish Guardia Civil has since confirmed that the two victims were Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre, who played for Portuguese second division club Penafiel.

Later reports revealed that the brothers were en route to Santander to board a ferry to England. Jota — who had recently married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22 — had been advised not to fly due to undergoing lung surgery.

Since the news broke, an outpouring of tributes has come from the football community and beyond.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot shared a heartfelt message on Thursday evening, joined by club captain Virgil van Dijk and several other Reds players who also paid tribute.

Jota, who was born near Gondomar in Porto, will be laid to rest in his hometown on Saturday morning.

He began his football journey with local side Gondomar SC at age 17 before moving to Portuguese club Paços de Ferreira in 2013.

Gondomar president Álvaro Cerqueira has since revealed that he spoke with Jota at around 10 p.m.—less than three hours before the tragic crash—and recalled details from their conversation.

“It was just after 10 p.m. last night [Thursday],” he told Portuguese outlet JN. “We spoke over the phone and he sounded completely fine.

“We talked almost every week, and I know he was in a really happy place.

“Whenever Diogo needed to train during the off-season, he’d ask to use our facilities, and we always made sure everything was ready for him.”

“His brother would often join him, and they’d both train together,” he said.

“It’s hard to find the words at a moment like this, but what will always stay with us is the memory of two incredibly humble individuals who now leave behind an irreplaceable void.”

In their honour, the town of Gondomar will observe a day of mourning on Friday. Flags across all municipal buildings and facilities will be flown at half-mast.

Gondomar’s mayor, Luís Filipe Araújo, described Jota as “an exceptional talent and a proud representative of Gondomar.”

He added: “[He was known for] carrying the name of our municipality and of Portugal to the grandest stages of European and global football — always with humility, commitment, and a deep sense of responsibility.”
