🕊️ UEFA to Lead Emotional Tributes for Diogo Jota & André Silva After Heartbreaking Crash in Spain 💔
- 🚨 UEFA to Honour Diogo Jota & Andre Silva Following Heartbreaking Tragedy in Spain 🕊️💔
The football world is in deep sorrow following the devastating deaths of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva — a fellow professional footballer for Penafiel — after a tragic car accident in Spain.
The brothers were travelling along the A-52 highway in Zamora, Spain, when a tyre suddenly burst as their car attempted to overtake another vehicle. The car veered off the road and caught fire, leading to the fatal incident (Daily Mail).
The news first broke through Spanish outlet Marca around 9am GMT and was later confirmed by several UK media sources. Liverpool FC officially announced Jota’s passing in a heartfelt club statement released Thursday morning.
A Wave of Tributes Across the Football World
Tributes have poured in from all corners of the sport and beyond. Portugal’s President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, offered his condolences, while Cristiano Ronaldo shared an emotional tribute on social media.
UEFA has since announced that a moment of silence will be observed ahead of every match at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 today and tomorrow, in honour of Diogo Jota and André Silva. One of those fixtures includes their home nation, Portugal, who will face reigning world champions Spain tonight in Bern.
Honouring the Lives of Diogo Jota and André Silva
Diogo Jota played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s recent Premier League title win and had also lifted the UEFA Nations League trophy with Portugal just last month.
Since arriving from Wolves in 2020, the 28-year-old forward netted 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, collecting multiple major honours during his five-season spell at Anfield.
Tragically, Jota had only recently married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, just 11 days ago, and leaves behind three young children.
His younger brother, André Silva, aged 25, rose through the youth ranks at FC Porto before carving out his professional career with Gondomar and Penafiel.
All of us at CaughtOffside are heartbroken by this devastating loss and extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and loved ones of both Diogo and André.
Good shout.
