Reporter Recounts How Car Became Entangled in Celebration Chaos
Massive crowds gathered to witness the Liverpool squad showcase the Premier League trophy
BBC reporter Dan Ogunshakin, who was at the scene with a friend, described seeing the car just before the shocking event. He said it was surrounded by jubilant Liverpool fans who were “rocking” and “banging” on the vehicle. The car then reversed into an ambulance before suddenly accelerating forward into the crowd. Ogunshakin noted that “the atmosphere completely changed” at that moment. He also shared that he assisted two people lying on the ground—an elderly woman and a man who was overwhelmed with tears. Ogunshakin added, “No one came to Liverpool expecting to experience something like that.”

Home after what's been a day I'll never forget for better or for worse.
It started as a mission to get to Liverpool itself from Manchester as thousands of people descended on the city to celebrate the Reds. After an hour-long wait the cheer that greeted our train was nuts

In the early hours of Tuesday, Ogunshakin took to X to share a detailed recount of the day leading up to the incident, along with a brief description of what followed.
“Home after a day I’ll never forget, for better or worse. It began with a mission to get from Manchester to Liverpool as thousands flocked to the city to celebrate the Reds. After waiting an hour, the cheer greeting our train was incredible,” he wrote in his first tweet.
“After one stop, the train was paused before continuing directly to Liverpool Lime Street. The songs that filled the air made the journey unforgettable. Everyone was excited. Arriving in Liverpool was overwhelming — people everywhere, a vibrant sea of color and noise.
“Everywhere was packed. Even getting a beer was tough, but the atmosphere was pure celebration, and no one minded. The bad weather couldn’t dampen spirits. We didn’t know when the parade would arrive, but the party went on without pause.
“Then the Liverpool team appeared, sending a wave of energy through the crowd. We only caught a brief glimpse, but it was enough. As they moved on, thousands followed, moving up Water Street — and that’s when everything changed from celebration to chaos.
“People scattered, struggling to process what had just happened. It was chaos. Panic spread quickly; injured people lay on the ground. The emergency teams acted heroically, stepping in with incredible speed and care. Around us, countless people were still in shock, struggling to grasp the reality of what had just happened — the whole scene felt unreal.
“I’m praying for a full recovery for those injured and can’t shake the overwhelming sense of gratitude for having escaped harm, especially being so close to the chaos.”
