“European Report Reveals Surprising Reason Slot Continues to Overlook Nunez – And It’s Not About Performance”

If Darwin Nunez departs Liverpool this summer, he could do so just one game shy of a significant milestone at Anfield.

The Uruguayan striker joined the Reds from Benfica in 2022 for an initial £64 million, with an additional £21 million in potential add-ons, some of which have already been activated.

Speculation is growing that this may be Nunez’s final season on Merseyside, with reputable sources like David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano suggesting the 25-year-old’s departure is imminent.

Reports indicate that Liverpool is nearing the activation of another transfer add-on for Nunez. He has made just one Premier League start since January, with Portuguese outlets offering a possible explanation for this limited game time.

According to A Bola (via Sport Witness), Benfica has already received €10 million (£8.6 million) in add-ons from Liverpool, tied to specific milestones such as Nunez’s starts in the Premier League and Champions League. The Lisbon club is set to receive another €5 million (£4.3 million) when the striker makes his 50th Premier League start—but he currently stands at 49.

Liverpool seems to have made up their mind about Darwin Nunez.

The striker has struggled in front of goal this season, scoring just seven times in 1,920 minutes— a stark contrast to his 18 goals in 3,026 minutes last year. However, his limited appearances in the starting lineup don’t appear to be entirely due to his performance.

With rumors of a summer exit growing stronger and no injuries among Liverpool’s current forwards, it’s possible that Nunez has already made his final Premier League start for the club. He didn’t feature in the recent win against Leicester, remained on the bench, and missed the West Ham match due to illness. Despite this, he has played in 42 games this season, suggesting Arne Slot isn’t completely sidelining him, especially not to the puzzling degree of Federico Chiesa’s exclusion.

The financial aspect raises questions as well. Avoiding the £4 million add-on payment for Nunez’s 50th Premier League start doesn’t seem significant enough to justify his absence, which could lead to the perception that he’s being unfairly treated.

If Liverpool intended to keep him for another season, triggering that milestone would be inevitable. This implies that Nunez is likely not part of the club’s long-term plans and could be sold this summer if an acceptable offer arises.
