“Liverpool on the Sidelines as ‘Positive Contract Talks’ Heat Up; Fabrizio Romano Confirms Active Negotiations with Key Target”

Matheus Cunha appears poised for a summer transfer, with Manchester United emerging as the frontrunner for his signature.

Fabrizio Romano shared the update on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that the Red Devils are already in talks over personal terms. This has been further validated by The Athletic in their report on Tuesday.

The Merseysiders appear willing to let the Wolves striker join their fiercest rivals, despite earlier reports linking Liverpool with an interest in Cunha as a potential summer signing.

Reinforcing their attacking lineup remains a key priority for Liverpool this summer.

Liverpool faces a pressing need to address a significant goal deficit in the upcoming transfer window.

Although Arne Slot’s side has excelled offensively this season, scoring 11 more Premier League goals than Manchester City, the team remains heavily reliant on Mo Salah. The Egyptian’s incredible consistency (32 goals in 126.59 minutes per goal) overshadows the contributions of others like Cody Gakpo (16 goals, 149.37 minutes per goal) and Luis Diaz (15 goals, 205.66 minutes per goal).

While Salah’s reliability offers some reassurance for 2024/25, Liverpool must consider both short- and long-term solutions, especially with his eventual departure set for the summer of 2027. The club urgently needs reinforcements to share the goal-scoring responsibility.

Cody Gakpo currently comes closest to Salah’s efficiency, but potential recruits like Matheus Cunha, who boasts a solid rate of one goal every 155.37 minutes (16 goals this season), could ease the burden. Meanwhile, Alexander Isak, with an impressive 119.08 minutes per goal (25 goals), would be an ideal signing. However, his high price tag may rule out a move from Newcastle.

Other potential targets reportedly under consideration include Hugo Ekitike (21 goals, 156.85 minutes per goal) and Joao Pedro (10 goals, 213.6 minutes per goal). Liverpool’s recruitment team will need to strike a balance between affordability and finding a player capable of thriving within their high-quality squad.
