“‘The path is set’ – Fabrizio Romano delivers key morning update on Darwin Nunez and Liverpool”
Darwin Nunez’s future has been a major talking point in recent months, with Fabrizio Romano providing a fresh update on the Liverpool striker this morning.
Last month, the well-known transfer journalist revealed that the Uruguayan forward was prepared to accept an offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in January. However, Liverpool’s management blocked the move, unwilling to part ways with him mid-season without sufficient time to secure a replacement.
Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce and former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy have both expressed doubts about Nunez’s long-term future at Anfield, stating they’d be ‘amazed’ if the 25-year-old remains with the club beyond August. Growing speculation suggests this season could be his last at Liverpool.
What has Romano said about Nunez now?
On Saturday morning, Fabrizio Romano shared an update on X, reaffirming the likelihood of Darwin Nunez leaving Liverpool in the summer. The striker is reportedly ‘open’ to exploring a move.
Romano wrote: “The plan has been clear since February and remains unchanged: Darwin Nunez is expected to depart Liverpool this summer. After the club rejected an offer from Al-Nassr in January, all options will be evaluated in the coming months. Darwin is also open to starting a new chapter.”

Are Liverpool preparing for life without Nunez?
Could this be the final chapter of Darwin Nunez’s eventful three-year stint at Liverpool?
His time at Anfield has been marked by ongoing scrutiny of his goal-scoring consistency. With just seven goals in 42 appearances this season, his output falls short of expectations for a player who could ultimately cost £85m after add-ons.
That said, a tally of 40 goals in 138 games isn’t dismal, and Nunez has shown a knack for delivering in crucial moments, netting late winners against Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, and Brentford in recent seasons.
If Nunez is indeed fighting for his future at Liverpool, he’ll be eager for head coach Arne Slot to grant him more opportunities in the remaining five weeks of the campaign. His only Premier League start in 2025 came last month in a 3-1 win over Southampton, where he scored.
While Slot has downplayed the prospect of a busy summer transfer window, Paul Joyce of The Times has reported that Liverpool is scouting several strikers as part of an ambitious shopping list, hinting that the club may be preparing to move on from the Uruguayan forward.
If this is to be Nunez’s final season with the Reds, fans will hope for a few more memorable moments before he departs.
