“Far from finished…” – Paul Scholes fires warning at Liverpool with unsettling ‘shaky’ verdict
“It’s not over yet…” – Paul Scholes sends warning shot to Liverpool with ominous ‘shaky’ claim
Paul Scholes has cautioned that Liverpool’s grip on the Premier League title could slip if they continue to show the same vulnerability they’ve displayed in recent outings.
The Reds suffered a 3-2 loss to Fulham on Sunday, a result that, while still leaving them 11 points ahead with seven games remaining, marked their third defeat in four matches across all competitions. The dip in form even prompted Roy Keane to liken their performances to that of a ‘mid-table team.’
Arsenal, meanwhile, still hold a slim hope of chasing down Arne Slot’s men. With the Gunners playing before Liverpool on every matchday leading up to their Anfield clash on May 11, the pressure could mount. However, Scholes believes Mikel Arteta’s side may have left it too late to mount a serious challenge.
Speaking as a pundit for Premier League Productions during Sunday’s game, the former Manchester United star didn’t hold back, criticising Liverpool’s recent displays as ‘arrogant’ and warning that the title, The title fight could still be decided in the final moments.
Scholes shared his thoughts post-match, saying: “The title race could still drag on. You’d expect Liverpool to get past West Ham and Leicester, though West Ham might pose the tougher test. What’s missing is a team breathing right down their necks.”
He added that Arsenal will be frustrated, seeing this as a golden chance—especially given Manchester City’s uncharacteristically underwhelming form this season.
“If Arsenal were just a little closer, things could’ve become shaky for Liverpool—and they still might, if Arsenal keep winning,” Scholes noted. “That said, it’s hard to see Arsenal winning every game, especially with their Real Madrid fixtures looming. As for Liverpool, based on that display, they look like they’re limping toward the finish line.”
He didn’t hold back on criticism either, suggesting a mentality issue: “I sensed a bit of arrogance, like they believed they were untouchable. That attitude has been creeping in lately, along with some sloppiness.”
Despite Sunday’s stumble, Liverpool should still have enough in the tank to see out the title race.
Alexis Mac Allister has pushed back on Paul Scholes’ claims of ‘arrogance’ within the squad, but both acknowledge that the Premier League crown isn’t quite wrapped up just yet—contrary to what some pundits have suggested.
The Reds remain 11 points clear with seven games to play, needing that same number of points to seal a historic 20th league title—assuming Arsenal don’t slip up along the way.
Upcoming fixtures against two of the league’s bottom five should, on paper, offer a chance to get back on track. And if the title isn’t secured before the showdown with Arsenal at Anfield in May, even a draw there could prove enough. Still, Arne Slot’s side haven’t delivered a truly dominant display since their win over Newcastle at the end of February.
Liverpool likely have enough of a cushion to absorb another setback or two and still cross the finish line as champions—but fans would surely prefer a more comfortable ride. A convincing response at home against West Ham next Sunday would go a long way in easing nerves and quieting talk of a team limping to the line.
