Mikel Merino: Arsenal Teammates Grill Him on Real Madrid’s UCL Aura

Mikel Merino: Arsenal Teammates Quiz Him on Real Madrid’s UCL Mystique

Mikel Merino has become Arsenal’s go-to source for insights on Real Madrid, with his teammates eager to pick his brain ahead of their Champions League quarter-final showdown next month.

The Gunners will welcome the 15-time European champions to the Emirates on April 8 for a high-stakes first-leg clash. While Madrid enter as favorites, Arsenal are determined to shake up the competition and prove they belong among Europe’s elite.

Having faced Los Blancos regularly during his six-year stint at Real Sociedad, Merino brings valuable firsthand experience of Madrid’s strengths. Naturally, his Arsenal teammates have turned to him for advice.

Merino revealed in an interview with Spanish radio station Onda Cero that his teammates frequently ask him about the Santiago Bernabéu, the atmosphere, and whether Real Madrid’s Champions League magic—especially their iconic comebacks—is as real as it seems.

“When you’ve seen them pull it off so many times, people start to believe in that aura,” he said.

Despite Madrid’s reputation, Merino insists that the Champions League remains unpredictable, making it impossible to declare a clear favorite.

“In this competition, small details make the difference. There are three or four teams capable of winning it, so choosing just one is impossible.”

From Emergency Striker to Spain Call-Up

Due to an injury crisis, Merino has found himself playing as a makeshift striker for Arsenal—and thriving. He has netted four goals in seven matches, proving his versatility. However, with a Spain call-up for the Nations League quarter-final against the Netherlands, he expects to return to his natural midfield role.

“That’s a decision for [Spain head coach] Luis de la Fuente,” Merino said when asked about his position. “I’ll be focusing on my usual role.

“He’s selecting forwards he trusts, and they’re delivering strong performances. If he’s calling me up, it’s to play where I’m most comfortable.”

Settling Into Life in North London

Since making the switch from Real Sociedad to Arsenal, Merino has been adjusting to a new club, city, and league. The transition wasn’t instant, but he now feels settled.

“I’m feeling more comfortable within the team, the squad, the city, and even the staff,” he admitted.

“After spending six or seven years surrounded by the same people, transitioning to a new environment was a significant change.

“Personally, it has been a unique and rewarding experience.”

I’m playing in a slightly different role, we’re still fighting for the league, and we have a thrilling Champions League challenge ahead.”
