“The Truth Came Out This Week” – Richard Keys Tears Into ‘Average’ Liverpool After Cup Final Collapse

“This Week Exposed Everything” – Richard Keys Ruthlessly Rips into ‘Average’ Liverpool After Cup Final Heartbreak

While Alan Shearer was respectful in his assessment of Liverpool following their Carabao Cup final loss to Newcastle on Sunday, Richard Keys took a far harsher stance.

Liverpool delivered a dismal display at Wembley, leaving little room for excuses over the result. The defeat capped off a terrible week for the Reds, who also crashed out of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.

Now, Arne Slot’s men have only one piece of silverware left to chase this season. However, with a commanding 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League and just nine games to go, they remain in a strong position to avoid finishing the campaign without a trophy.

Keys takes aim at ‘average’ Liverpool

Having been thoroughly unimpressed with Liverpool’s performances in their last two outings, Richard Keys dismissed the Reds’ position at the top of the Premier League as more a reflection of their rivals’ shortcomings than their own quality.

Taking to X on Sunday night, the beIN SPORTS presenter didn’t hold back, writing: *“I’ve had no idea all season how good this Liverpool team actually is. This week told us everything – they’re average.

“They’re top for two reasons: a strong start and because every other challenger has stumbled. Slot is quickly learning that English football isn’t as simple as it looks.”*

Disrespectful from Keys

Yes, Liverpool have had a rough week, falling short in both the Champions League and Carabao Cup. But Richard Keys’ assessment — echoed by Les Ferdinand’s equally laughable take — is wildly disingenuous.

His comments aren’t just disrespectful to Liverpool, but also to PSG and Newcastle, who fully earned their victories and should be applauded for beating the Premier League leaders.

As for Keys’ claim that Liverpool are top only because others have faltered, let’s remind him: we’ve lost just once in the league all season — and that was over six months ago to the team currently third.

Suggesting that Arne Slot is only now “discovering” how tough English football is shows a complete lack of attention. Had Keys bothered to listen to Slot’s press conferences, he’d know the coach has repeatedly acknowledged how demanding the Premier League is compared to the Eredivisie.

For a manager stepping into the shoes of a club legend and losing only one of his first 29 league games, Slot deserves far more credit than Keys is willing to give. Still, if Liverpool lift the Premier League trophy in a few weeks, Keys’ words will be nothing more than background noise to Reds fans.
