Exclusive: Spurs Poised to Block Romero’s Argentina Call-Up as Behind-the-Scenes Talks Unfold

Exclusive: Spurs Set to Block Romero’s Argentina Call-Up Amid Private Talks

Tottenham standout Cristian Romero may miss the chance to represent Argentina in March.

With Ange Postecoglou unable to rely on Romero or Micky van de Ven in recent months, Archie Gray and Kevin Danso have solidified themselves as the preferred centre-back duo.

Romero last played for Spurs in their 4-3 Premier League loss to Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, December 8.

His return remains uncertain, raising doubts about his availability for Tottenham’s UEFA Europa League clash against AZ Alkmaar at the AFAS Stadion on Thursday, March 6.

As a result, he may be unable to join Argentina for the upcoming international break—a decision that could spark tensions behind the scenes.

Tottenham Pressured to Block Romero’s Argentina Call-Up

Romero recently sent Spurs fans into a frenzy after returning to training, with many questioning the timing—just ahead of Argentina’s March fixtures.

This theory was echoed by Last Word On Spurs. However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham—speaking exclusively to Tottenham News—insists Romero shouldn’t be allowed to play for Argentina next month and believes discussions are needed if this becomes a problem.

“We’ve been hearing for weeks now that Romero is set to return soon,” Wenham said.

“When you consider that Romero and Van de Ven—our two best centre-backs—have played just two of the last 27 games, it’s ridiculous. They’ve been unavailable for such a huge portion of the season.

“Because of that, I believe Tottenham should stand firm and inform Argentina that Romero isn’t available for the March international break. He simply hasn’t played enough. On this occasion, we say no, and if that causes an issue, it should be addressed internally within the club.”

Romero Set for Frustration if Spurs Block Argentina Call-Up

Every Spurs fan knows how much representing Argentina means to Romero.

If Tottenham prevent him from traveling, it’s unlikely to sit well with the defender. However, the club is fully within its rights to make that call.

Cristian Romero’s 2024/25 Tottenham Appearances:

Premier League: 12

UEFA Europa League: 1

Carabao Cup: 1

Romero hasn’t played for months, and even if he is declared fit, he should stay at Hotspur Way to rebuild his fitness—rather than travel halfway across the world and risk another setback.
